Old Jaffa: what it is, and why people come
Jaffa is the old port city that Tel Aviv grew out of, and the two are one municipality today. The historic core is a hill of stone alleys above the harbour: the fishing port itself, Kedumim Square with the Franciscan church whose bell tower is the landmark, the flea market on the edge of the old town, and the beach at Ajami below the slope park.
People come for three different things. Some come for the view and the walk — the promenade from Tel Aviv ends here. Some come for the flea market and the small shops and cafés around it. And some come for the evening: the port and the lanes above it are one of the few places in the city where a meal next to the water is the point of the trip.
Getting there without a taxi
The walk along the beach promenade from central Tel Aviv takes about 45 to 60 minutes and is one of the best things to do in the city; the cycle path follows the same line. Bus routes run along Jaffa's main roads and are the usual local option. What none of them solve is a specific address inside the old town: buses stop on the main road, and the last stretch is uphill on stone.
A taxi earns its place when you are arriving with luggage, arriving after dark, or going straight from the airport — and when the destination is a restaurant or a hotel inside Jaffa, where knowing which street a car can enter saves a long walk with bags.
