The market: what it is, and how a visit works

Carmel Market is the everyday street market of central Tel Aviv — a long pedestrian street of produce, fish, cheese, nuts and household goods, in the middle of the Kerem HaTeimanim neighbourhood. The lanes off it have become food streets in their own right: bakeries, hummus, juice stands and small restaurants.

The rhythm matters more here than opening hours. It is closed for Shabbat, so the market fills up through Friday and empties by Friday afternoon; it is busiest in the morning. Sunday to Thursday it is a working market rather than an outing, which is when locals shop and when prices and produce are at their most normal.

Getting there without a taxi

Carmel Street is pedestrian, and the market area is a five to fifteen minute walk from almost anywhere in the city centre — from Rothschild Boulevard, from Allenby, from the beach. Buses run along Allenby and the nearby main streets. Walking is genuinely the right answer for a market visit: the point is to wander, and there is nowhere to park.

A taxi makes sense for the edges of the trip rather than the middle of it: arriving with luggage from the airport before a hotel check-in, or leaving with bags and boxes at the end, when the walk back carrying everything is no longer fun. Markets and shopping guide · City taxi pickups · Price list
