Tel Aviv markets and shopping — and where the car stops

Tel Aviv's markets are not one thing: Carmel is the everyday street market, Levinsky is the food and spice street, Sarona is an indoor market in a restored compound, and Jaffa's flea market is the one you wander. They are all places where the last hundred metres are on foot, and where a driver who knows the streets saves you a long detour with shopping bags.

The four markets, and what each one is for

Carmel Market (Shuk HaCarmel)

The everyday market of the city centre: produce, fish, cheese, nuts, cheap household goods, and the side alleys around Kerem HaTeimanim that turn into food streets. It is busiest on Friday morning, and it closes for Shabbat — the whole area changes character by Friday afternoon.

Levinsky Market

Levinsky is narrower and more specialised: spices, dried fruit, delis, small bakeries and shops that have been in the same family for decades. It is the market people come to for one specific thing, and the street is too narrow to stop on for long.

Sarona Market

An indoor food market inside the restored Templer colony of Sarona, next to the towers of the business district. This is the one that works in heat and in rain, and the one with the easiest access — which also makes it the easiest pickup of the four.

The Jaffa flea market

The flea market on the edge of Old Jaffa is the browsing market: furniture, vintage, junk, coffee. Its streets are narrow and the surrounding lanes are closed to vehicles in places, so the pickup point is agreed on the nearest street that a car can use.

Practical: pickup, bags and timing

Two rules cover almost every market trip. First, the pickup is not on the market street: on Carmel the parallel streets and the nearby squares are where a car waits, and on market days even those are congested. Second, bags change the vehicle — four people with shopping for a family are not the same as four people with a handbag each, and a large taxi is often the better fit. Large taxi and minibus

On timing: Friday morning is the busiest and the most atmospheric, and the worst time to book a pickup without saying so. If you are going on to the airport afterwards, tell us at booking — the car that is right for a market run with crates and boxes is not always the car you want for a flight thirty minutes later. Markets and shopping questions

Where does a taxi stop for Carmel Market?

Not on the market street itself. The pickup is set on a parallel street or a nearby square, agreed when you book.

Which market is easiest with a car?

Sarona Market — it has the most usable access of the four, and it works in heat and rain.

Can we go from the market straight to the airport?

Yes. Say so when booking, because the luggage space and the pickup point change.
