Where to stay in Tel Aviv

Most Tel Aviv accommodation advice is about views. This one is partly about how easily you can leave, which matters more than people expect in a city where the airport is 20 km away and the trains stop on Friday afternoon.

The beachfront strip

The hotels along HaYarkon Street and the seafront — the Hilton, Dan, Carlton, David InterContinental and the rest — are the default for visitors, and for good reason: you are on the beach, the promenade is outside, and the centre is a short walk inland. See the beachfront hotel area.

The trade-off is that this is the busiest and most expensive part, and the streets immediately behind the hotels are where the traffic is worst. For an airport run, allow more time than the distance suggests.

The city centre

Staying around Rothschild, Dizengoff or the Carmel Market puts you in the middle of the city rather than on its edge — better for eating, walking and the Bauhaus streets, and usually a little cheaper. See city centre hotels.

It is a 10 to 20 minute walk to the sea from most of it, which is the one thing you give up.

North, and Jaffa

North Tel Aviv around the port and the Yarkon is quieter, greener and more residential, with the Tel Aviv Port as its anchor — good if you want calm and are happy to take a car or bike into the centre. Jaffa at the southern end is the atmospheric choice: stone lanes, the flea market and the old harbour, with the newest hotel stock in the city.

From either end, getting to the airport is a car ride — see getting in from Ben Gurion for timings.

Practical details

  • Beachfront: on the sand, busiest, most expensive
  • City centre: best for eating and walking, 10–20 min from the sea
  • North and the port: quieter and greener
  • Jaffa: the most atmospheric, newest hotels
  • The airport is 20 km — always a car ride, never a walk

Frequently asked questions

Which area is best for a first visit?

Between the beachfront and Rothschild. You get the sea, the promenade and the centre within walking distance.

Is it better to stay near the beach or the centre?

Near the beach if the sea is the point of the trip; in the centre if eating, bars and walking are. The two are 10–20 minutes apart on foot.

How far is the airport from the hotels?

About 20 km. Roughly 20 to 40 minutes by road depending on traffic and which part of the city you are leaving from.
