Jerusalem — the obvious one, and it works

About 60 km east, roughly 45 to 60 minutes on Highway 1 with normal traffic. It is the day trip that genuinely fits: leave after breakfast, spend the day in the Old City, and be back for dinner. The Tel Aviv to Jerusalem route covers how the drive works.

Note that Friday is a poor day for this — the Old City fills and the afternoon closes in around Shabbat.

The Dead Sea — doable, but a long day

About 150 km southeast, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way. That is four hours of driving in a day, which leaves a few hours at Ein Bokek. It works, but it is a full day and it is much better with a driver than with a rental car and a parking problem at the end of it. See the Dead Sea route.

Haifa, Caesarea and the north

Haifa is about 95 km north — roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. The Bahá'í Gardens and the German Colony make it a worthwhile day, and the coastal drive is the pleasant part. See the Tel Aviv to Haifa route.

Caesarea is closer, about 50 km up the coast — the Roman harbour ruins are a half-day, which makes it the easiest trip on this list to combine with something else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Tel Aviv?

Jerusalem. It is the closest of the big destinations, the drive is short, and there is enough there to fill a day properly.

Can I do the Dead Sea and back in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day — about four hours of driving. It is more comfortable with a driver than self-driving.

Should I rent a car or book a driver?

For a single day trip, a driver is usually simpler: no parking, no unfamiliar roads, and the timing is agreed in advance.
