Rishon LeZion guide — old colony, wineries and parks
Rishon LeZion began as one of the first new Jewish settlements of the 1880s and grew into one of the country's largest cities. The result is a city with two faces: a small historic colony of low houses and narrow streets, and wide modern districts around it. This guide is about the older part, and about staying connected to the airport and the coast.

The old colony, and what a visit looks like
The historic core is a compact grid of small houses, some of them preserved, on streets that were laid out for carriages rather than cars. It is the part of the city with the most character and the least parking: a taxi that drops you at the edge of the old colony is usually more useful than one that tries to enter it.
Wine and the city's beginnings
Rishon LeZion's identity is bound up with wine: the town's early economy rested on vineyards and the winery that grew out of them, and reminders of that history are part of the old centre and its small museums. Visitors who come for that story tend to move between a handful of sites within walking distance of each other.
The lake park and the green edge
The city's large park around the lake is where residents walk, cycle and spend Friday afternoons. It is spread out, with several entrances — again, the entrance matters.
Getting there and onward
Rishon LeZion sits south-east of Tel Aviv and north of the airport, connected by bus routes and by light rail on its edges, with the Ayalon corridor running alongside. For a commuter, public transport works. For a visitor moving between the old colony, a shopping centre and a hotel on the other side of the city, a car saves the awkward middle journeys.
Because it sits between Tel Aviv and the airport, Rishon LeZion is also a practical stop on the way to a flight: the drive to Ben Gurion is short and predictable outside rush hour. Ben Gurion arrivals pickup · Service areas · Price list
